Líderes Latinos Trabajarán en el Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA).

New York, NY, February 1, 2010 – The Latino Commission on AIDS congratulates the new members of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA) and applauds PACHA on its selection of these important leaders. The Commission particularly offers its support for five of PACHA’s new Latino members, whose notable work has contributed to enhancing the lives of Latinos living with HIV/AIDS. These prominent individuals are valuable advocates for the voices of Latino/Hispanic communities and the Commission backs their efforts as they move forward in their new membership roles:

· Pat Garcia, MD, MPH, Director, Women’s HIV Center, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, Illinois

· Sandra Torres-Rivera, Executive Director, Bill’s Kitchen, San Juan, Puerto Rico
· Rosie Pérez, Actor, Choreographer, and Director, New York, New York

PACHA’s mission is to provide advice, information, and recommendations to the Secretary of State regarding programs and policies intended to promote effective prevention of HIV disease, and to advance research on HIV disease and AIDS. The Council may have up to 25 members, including the Chair. Members and the chair are selected by the Secretary from authorities with particular expertise in, or knowledge of, matters concerning HIV and AIDS. Council members are invited to serve for overlapping terms of up to four years; terms are contingent upon the authorized continuation of the Council.

The Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA) is sworn in and holds its initial meeting. PACHA provides advice, information, and recommendations to the President through the Secretary of Health and Human Services on domestic and global HIV/AIDS policy issues.
