Staff Bios

Andrew Spieldenner, Ph.D.,
Deputy Director of Research and Evaluation

Dr. Andrew Spieldenner serves as co-investigator with Dr. Vega on research and evaluation initiatives. His program implementation and capacity building experience includes positions with the National Association of People with AIDS, the New York City Department of Health, and the Black AIDS Institute. His research focuses on HIV-related stigma and disclosure, intercultural communication, health media, and sexuality. Dr. Spieldenner has produced media for HIV prevention, STI awareness, tobacco cessation, and West Nile Virus. He holds a Ph.D. in Health Communication from Howard University, MA in Theater from University of California, Los Angeles, and BA in Ethnic Studies from University of California, Berkeley.



Yanira Arias,
Director of Community Organizing

Yanira Arias was born in San Salvador, El Salvador. She graduated from the University of El Salvador in 1996 with a focus in journalism. Since 2003, Ms. Arias has worked for the Latino Commission on AIDS, providing HIV prevention education to Latinas and Latinos in faith communities in New York City. In 2007 she started a new program, "My Healthy Home" (Mi Casa Sana), an initiative that promotes smoking cessation and the reduction of exposure to secondary smoke among Spanish speaking Latinas. She enjoys photography, cycling, and spending time outdoors.



Tony Ochoa Tony Ochoa,
CBA Specialist

Raised in a first-generation Mexican neighborhood in Los Angeles, Tony Ochoa has a strong passion for addressing health disparities amongst underserved populations. He received a BS in Product Design Engineering from Stanford University, where he was a member of numerous Latino community-based and student organizations that worked with underprivileged youth and higher education. He brings his professional background in design engineering to bear on his work in the community, in order to build the capacity of organizations that service communities living with HIV/AIDS. He enjoys cooking, travelling, reading, personal fitness, and watching documentary/independent films.
